Reframe Test

Reasoning

Level 2 · Advanced reasoning

Restate the problem from a different angle before solving it, to check whether the original framing was the right one.

Reframe Test asks the model to restate the problem in one alternative way before answering, then check whether that reframing actually changes the approach. It's a lighter check than Step-back prompting: Step-back extracts a general principle and reapplies it to the specific case, while Reframe Test simply restates the question from another angle without necessarily abstracting a principle — useful when the framing itself, not the missing background, might be steering toward the wrong answer. See also Step-back prompting if what you're actually looking for is a general principle to apply.

When to use it

Use it for ambiguous or high-stakes problems where the framing itself might be steering you toward the wrong answer.

When to avoid it

Avoid it for well-defined tasks where the framing was never in question.

Advantages

  • Cheap way to catch a case where the original framing was quietly wrong
  • Doesn't require identifying a general principle first, unlike Step-back

Disadvantages

  • For a well-framed problem, this is pure overhead with no payoff
  • A superficial reframing that doesn't actually challenge the original framing adds length without adding insight

Examples

How do we reduce customer support ticket volume?

Before answering, restate this problem in one alternative way. Does the reframing change your approach? Then give your final answer.

(An alternative framing might be: 'how do we help customers succeed without needing support at all' — a different question that could lead to a different answer.)

Suggestions
  • Fill in the remaining placeholders.
  • Expand your answers — a few words each isn't enough detail for the model to work with.
  • Add background context so the model understands the situation.
